Thai-Cambodian Border Talks Set to Commence in Malaysia
"I will lead Cambodian delegation to attend a special meeting in Kuala Lumpur," Hun Manet stated on his official social media accounts Sunday night. He emphasized, "the purpose of this meeting is to achieve an immediate ceasefire."
Hun Manet also expressed gratitude to Malaysia's leader for facilitating the talks: "I'd like to thank [Malaysian] Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his initiative and coordination to organize and host this special meeting."
Thai government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub confirmed that Phumtham will head the Thai delegation during the emergency discussions focused on resolving the border dispute with Cambodia.
In an official statement, Jirayu noted that Phumtham will depart for Malaysia on Monday following an invitation from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is currently serving as chair of ASEAN.
Hostilities between Thai and Cambodian troops over contested sections of the border have continued for five consecutive days, according to Cambodian defense ministry undersecretary of state and spokesperson Lieutenant General Maly Socheata.
